The Manufactured Muse
A monochrome study of beauty, identity and control.
A cohesive series of ten fashion-inflected portraits examines the boundary between human presence and manufactured image. Sculptural black silhouettes, artificial gestures and theatrical makeup turn the near-empty studio into a stage for controlled emotion and visual tension.

Constructed beauty, held in stillness
The series draws on the visual language of avant-garde fashion, studio portraiture and theatrical performance. Doll-like makeup, composed poses and deliberate negative space give each image a distance from ordinary life: intimate, yet distinctly artificial.
Black tailoring becomes a graphic silhouette against a near-empty setting. A gloved hand, a lifted chin or a measured turn of the head reads as a carefully directed gesture. The restraint is part of the drama; each portrait leaves room for tension to gather.

An image between eras
The portraits revisit an older theatrical language through a contemporary synthetic process. Stark monochrome, exaggerated forms and sculptural beauty recall the artifice of silent cinema, while the framing remains unmistakably contemporary. The result feels familiar, yet suspended between eras.
Rather than assigning the muse a fixed story, the series keeps her just out of reach. Her controlled expression becomes a surface on which fashion, identity and authorship meet.

Artist-directed image making
Generative AI is used within an artist-directed process encompassing concept development, visual direction, selection and refinement. The images are shaped into a coherent visual world through monochrome contrast, sculptural silhouettes and deliberate control of space.
The series is conceived and art-directed by Daniel Novague.
